Resonant Dance Floors

Artist Joe Namy examines the healing effects of sound on the body through their work.

Namy shares insights on their research, creative process and time spent as a Somerset House Studios resident. The film unpacks the ideas that influenced their ongoing 'Disguise as Dancefloor' project and their exploration of the subversive politics of bass and healing properties of movement. In its most recent iteration, Namy invited collaborators to come together on a custom, copper-tiled dancefloor for a series of four improvised performances during AGM 2023. The event paired guest DJs Cõvco, Ain Bailey, Nihal El Aasar and Paul Purgas with movement artists Malik Nashad Sharpe, Alexandrina Hemsley (Yewande 103), Dove and Hannah Hernandez. Through the work, Namy seeks to answer: where does all that energy go when you release it onto the dance floor?

Sound is a force that can heal, destroy, and move us in different ways
