London-based poet, artist and writer Rene Matić explores the multiplicity of Blackness and personal identity across a variety of media, from photography to textiles.
Their work is shaped by subcultural movements like northern soul, ska, and 2-Tone, using them as sites to queer and re-imagine the intimacies between West Indian and white working-class culture in Britain. Matić’s recent book ‘flags for countries that don’t exist but bodies that do’ provides an intimate snapshot of their photography from 2018 - 2021. Their art has also been exhibited in the Tate, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol, and several other spaces.
Rene Matić is currently a resident at Somerset House Studios.
